Roof Moss Removal in Blackpool, the Fylde Coast & Lancashire

Moss is the most common roof problem on the Fylde Coast. It thrives on damp, shaded pitches, holds water against the tile surface and breaks away in clumps that block gutters and downpipes.

This work is often part of a full roof clean, but it can also be carried out on its own where the roof is otherwise sound.

Sovereign covers Blackpool and the Fylde area, and a wider area up to around 50 miles from base for roof moss removal.

Quick answer

Roof moss removal targets established, thick moss that has taken hold along tile edges and in the laps — the growth that sheds into gutters and keeps a roof damp long after rain.

The bulk of the growth is removed carefully, with the method matched to the covering and its condition rather than applied the same way to every roof. Gutters and downpipes are cleared once the debris is down.

It is not a roof survey. Obvious issues such as a loose or slipped tile may be noticed while working and can be discussed, but nothing is guaranteed to be found.

Does roof moss cause damage?

Moss itself does not eat through a tile, but it keeps the surface permanently wet, which accelerates frost damage on older concrete and clay. The bigger practical problem is the debris: moss constantly sheds into gutters, and blocked gutters cause damp walls.

How moss is removed

Moss is lifted using scraping tools shaped to the tile profile, so the tool follows the tile rather than scouring it. The roof is then treated with sodium hypochlorite and biocide, which continue to break down remaining growth and slow its return.

Loose material is cleared from the roof, gutters and ground before we leave.

When it is worth doing

If you can see clumps of moss on the tiles from the ground, are regularly picking moss out of the gutters, or are preparing to sell, it is worth having the roof looked at.

Damaged tiles that show up while the moss comes off

Once moss is lifted off a roof, tiles that were hidden underneath it become visible. This is not a formal inspection and nothing can be promised in advance, but where a damaged, cracked or missing tile is obviously there, it is pointed out rather than left unmentioned.

Where the repair is a minor one and within what Sovereign takes on, it can be discussed with you and, if you want it done, sorted while the access is already set up. Anything larger belongs with a roofer.

Roof moss removal in Blackpool, Cleveleys and Thornton-Cleveleys

Moss is the single most common roof complaint locally. Coastal damp keeps pitches wet near the sea, and mature trees on the inland Thornton side keep them shaded, so growth establishes readily across the whole township and into Blackpool.

Because Sovereign is based in Cleveleys, a local roof can be assessed properly before a method is chosen. Moss removal also travels further across the Fylde Coast and up to around 50 miles from base for suitable work.

Sovereign Roof Care

Cleaned carefully, then kept that way

Not every roof should be blasted with high pressure. Sovereign chooses the method after looking at the roof, treats it afterwards, and can keep on top of it later with a lighter treatment.

  • 2-Year Moss Regrowth Guarantee
  • Neighbour discounts
  • Pensioner discount
  • Roof Care top-up from £350

Treatment top-ups start from £350 and are priced per roof — size, condition, access and location all change the figure, and a top-up is not suitable for every roof.

  • I recently moved into a new property and quickly noticed the roof was heavily covered in moss. I knew leaving it could lead to all sorts of problems in the future, so I started looking around for a reputable roof cleaning company. I'm so glad I came across Sovereign Exterior Cleaning. Robert came out promptly to inspect the roof and provided a very reasonable quote with no pressure whatsoever. From start to finish, the service was absolutely first class. He always turned up exactly when he said he would, was friendly, professional, and took the time to explain the whole process. The transformation is unbelievable, the roof looks like new!
